Chapter 259 He Doesn't Want Me Anymore
Chapter 259 He Doesn't Want Me Anymore
When Lin Yue got home, the moment the door closed, she slid down and sat on the floor.
Leaning against the door panel, it felt cool.
She took the gold bracelet out of her bosom and held it tightly in her hand.
There were still water stains on the bracelet, it was wet, and when it rubbed onto my clothes, it left a small dark patch.
She looked at the bracelet, and tears welled up in her eyes again.
She held the bracelet up to her eyes, her vision blurred with tears, unable to make out the patterns, only seeing a bright yellow light.
She put it on her face; it felt cool against her skin.
She remembered him standing in front of the jewelry store counter, pawning the silver bracelet his grandmother had given him, and exchanging it for this gold bracelet.
She remembered the bruises on his face and how he smiled and said, "It's nothing."
She remembered him standing at the alley entrance, holding a thermos, looking silly and dazed.
She remembered him saying, "You are the woman I've decided to spend my life with."
She burst into tears.
It wasn't the kind of quiet, suppressed crying; it was the kind of heart-wrenching crying that was squeezed out from the throat.
She buried her face in her knees, her shoulders trembling, curled up like an abandoned cat.
There was a knock on the door.
She suddenly raised her head, scrambled to her feet as if possessed, rushed to the door, and flung it open.
It's not Song Huan.
It's Sister Peach.
She stood at the door, holding a plastic bag containing several boxes of medicine.
She looked at Lin Yue's expression.
Her hair was wet, her clothes were wet, her face was covered in tear stains, and her eyes were swollen like walnuts.
She sighed, came in, and closed the door.
"Why bother?" Sister Peach put the medicine on the table and pulled Lin Yue to sit on the sofa.
Lin Yue sat there, head down, tears still streaming down her face, one drop at a time, falling onto the back of her hand.
She clutched the gold bracelet in her hand, her nails digging into her palm.
Sister Peach looked at the bracelet, then at her, and waited without saying a word.
"Sister Peach..." Lin Yue's voice was hoarse, "Am I very dirty?"
Sister Peach was stunned for a moment.
"What did you say?"
"Am I a dirty person? Someone who drinks with others, smiles for them, drinks with them. Am I a dirty person?"
She looked up at Sister Peach, her eyes red and filled with tears.
"He should find a clean and gentle girl, not someone like me. Someone like me is not good enough for him."
Sister Peach opened her mouth, as if to say something.
Lin Yue didn't let her speak.
"He was so good to me. He cooked for me, gave me a gold bracelet, and said I was a good girl. He worked three jobs a day for me and got beaten up until his face was covered in blood. He even pawned the family heirloom from his grandmother to buy this for me."
She held up the gold bracelet, her hand trembling.
"But what about me? I lied to him, I hid it from him, I wore those clothes and drank with other men. He saw it, he saw everything."
Her voice grew softer and softer, more fragmented.
"He doesn't want me anymore. He threw away the bracelet I gave him. He doesn't want me anymore..."
Sister Peach looked at her, at her sobbing uncontrollably, and felt a tightness in her chest.
She reached out and pulled Lin Yue close, letting her lean on her shoulder.
Lin Yue leaned on her shoulder and cried even harder, her tears soaking a patch of Taozi's clothes.
"I swear I will never trust anyone again."
Her voice was muffled, coming from Sister Peach's shoulder.
"But he clearly won my heart, so why doesn't he want me anymore? Why?"
Sister Peach patted her back gently, one pat at a time, without saying a word.
She didn't know what to say.
She's seen too many girls like that.
They came in good health, but left battered and bruised.
Some were cheated by customers, some by their boyfriends, and some by life itself.
Lin Yue is not the first, nor will she be the last.
She sighed and hugged Lin Yue a little tighter.
It was dark outside the window, and the room was pitch black inside because the lights were off.
Only Lin Yue's sobs echoed in the empty room.
……
Song Huan walked down the street, head down, looking at her shoes.
The shoes were still the same old shoes, but the tears in the uppers had gotten bigger. With each step, the tears would widen, as if they were laughing at him.
The streetlights shone on him, casting a lonely shadow on the ground.
He walked very slowly, as if he were carrying something on his back.
Suddenly, a beam of light shone from behind, making him squint.
He turned around and saw a black Maybach parked next to him, its emblem reflecting the light under the streetlights.
The car door opened, and a man got out.
He wore a dark suit, his hair was neatly combed, and his leather shoes were shiny.
It's that person.
The person standing next to Lin Yue at the entrance of the KTV.
Chen Tianren walked up to him and stood opposite him.
The two people were two steps apart.
He was half a head taller than Song Huan, looking down at him.
"Your name is Song Huan?"
Song Huan didn't speak, she just looked at him.
"My name is Chen Tianren." He took out a business card from his pocket and handed it over.
Song Huan did not answer.
Chen Tianren didn't mind, took the business card back, and put it in his pocket.
"You two are not a good match," Chen Tianren said bluntly.
Song Huan clenched her fists.
Chen Tianren slowly began to speak, "How long have you known her? Do you even know her? Do you know anything about her family? Do you know that her mother has a mental illness, and her father is drowning in debt, with creditors searching for her everywhere?"
Song Huan was stunned.
"You don't know anything. You only know she's beautiful, you like her, and you want to marry her. But what do you have to offer to marry her? You can't even support yourself."
Song Huan's hands were trembling.
"I heard you're a poor student who works three jobs a day and gets beaten up in the square just to buy a gold bracelet. Do you think you're so great?"
Chen Tianren's voice wasn't loud, but every word was like a knife.
"You think you love her? You can't even accept what kind of job she does, so what do you love about her?"
Song Huan suddenly raised her head. "Shut up!"
Chen Tianren didn't shut up.
"You make her quit, you make her leave, and then what? Who will pay for her mother's medical bills? Who will pay her student loans? Who will pay her father's debts? You? How will you pay them off?"
Song Huan's lips trembled, and she couldn't speak.
Chen Tianren pulled a wad of cash from his pocket; it was red, brand new, and tied with a rubber band.
He threw the money on the ground, right at Song Huan's feet.
"Take it and get lost."
Song Huan lowered her head, looking at the stack of money on the ground.
The streetlights shone on it, making it a blindingly red.
He squatted down and picked up the stack of money.
Chen Tianren gave a cold laugh.
Song Huan stood up, clutching the wad of money tightly.
He looked at Chen Tianren, and Chen Tianren looked at him.
Song Huan raised her hand and threw the wad of money at Chen Tianren's face.
The money scattered, flying through the air, landing on the ground, on Chen Tianren's shoulder, and on the roof of the car.
Red paper scraps fluttered under the streetlights, like a flock of butterflies.
"Who the hell do you think you are?" Song Huan's voice trembled, but every word was heavy. "You think you're so great just because you have a little money? You think money can buy everything? You can't buy her, you can't buy her!"
Chen Tianren stood there, his smile fading.
He looked at Song Huan, and Song Huan looked at him. They stared at each other for a few seconds.
Chen Tianren bent down, picked up a banknote from the ground, dusted it off, and stuffed it into his pocket.
You'll regret it.
He turned around, opened the car door, and got in.
The car door closed.
The Maybach pulled away from the roadside, merged into the traffic, its taillights receding into the distance, and disappeared around the street corner.
