Chapter 258 – Poisoning the Air…
Chapter 258 – Poisoning the Air…
[Chapter Size: 2400 Words.]
Third Person POV.
King's Landing.
...
...
The first thing Daemon did was check on the black dragon. No one bothered him as he approached them, entering the area behind the walls that no one came near, not even the walls themselves, out of fear of receiving the fury of those dragons that would make even men like the Mountain seem like ants.
He first greeted the green dragon, which let out a puff of breath upon feeling his touch.
"We need to choose a name for you soon... No, let's choose one now, just let me think for a bit...", he said, patting its hide while the dragon reacted to it.
Then, he walked over to the black dragon to check its injuries. It was reasonably well.
"KAAN" Just a single word of KAAN DREM OV. The Thu'um that calms wildlife.
Its eyes slowly opened when Daemon used only one word of one of the Thu'um that could calm animals. It wasn't something necessarily used to wake a dragon, but due to the touch on its mind trying to shift it into something more peaceful, it was enough to awaken a dragon in its sleep.
The dragon opened its eyes.
Daemon needed to check its level of hostility.
The creature began to lift its head, staring at him from very close range, it was not hostile, but that could be temporary. Even so, he remained calm until the effect wore off, since it wouldn't last long with him using only one word. It wasn't the first time he had been this close to a dragon. He knew how to act.
"Rytsas… skorkydoso glaeson?" [Hello... how are you?], Daemon spoke in High Valyrian.
The dragon blinked, trying to recognize the man in front of it. Daemon even made an effort to create a connection. He knew he couldn't be the rider of that dragon, but he could still convey his intentions.
The dragon felt it.
It remembered the defeat. The submission. When Daemon pressed it repeatedly to yield, while it was crushed against the ground by a force with each shout of the Unrelenting Force shout.
The dragon snorted, slightly opening its mouth and showing its teeth.
But Daemon remained firm, staring into the creature's eyes, ready for either an attack or submission.
Until the dragon began to lower its head.
That made Daemon touch its snout with his bare hands. The dragon reacted to the touch. It recognized him. Not as a rider… but it recognized his blood.
"Anyway... I hope you manage to form a bond with my wife. Daenerys will certainly appreciate that", Daemon said.
He continued observing the dragon for a while.
He looked at the green dragon as well.
"I saw the name Blackfyre gave you... it doesn't seem very worthy. So, we're going to rename you. I will call you Viridrax. It seems obvious, since it means green...", Daemon said to the green dragon, which let out a low sound, seeming satisfied.
Then he looked at the black dragon, which blinked slowly.
"Well... I think it's not fair for me to give you a name right now. I want you to first reach Winterfell. If my wife manages to form a bond with you, she will have the right to choose your name", he said.
The dragon snorted, as if it didn't like the answer, showing some irritation at still not having a name.
In any case, Daemon silently conveyed that they should remain there, while he called his other dragon, which was flying over King's Landing at that exact moment.
White wings appeared before the walls, curving downward before beginning to beat harder, slowing down until landing. Winter let out a small roar toward the other dragons.
Viridrax reacted by growling at her, while even the black dragon watched her with a challenging gaze.
There was a clear dynamic between them, Daemon noticed.
The green dragon and the black dragon were practically the same size, as they had grown together in the open. Even so, the black dragon was clearly dominant, while the green one was more passive. Though it seemed to want to rival Winter.
Under the gaze of everyone there, watching the dynamic between giant dragons, Daemon stepped forward, entering between the three, he was just an ant compared to the titans.
"Calm down", Daemon tried to convey mentally to all three.
They seemed to obey, calming down, though they still showed some reluctance.
"I hope you get used to living with each other soon.", he said.
Then again, he reminded that the other two fire dragons should remain there.
Next, he walked over to Winter. "We need to put a saddle on you", he didn't fail to whisper.
He was already used to riding without one, but a saddle would certainly bring more comfort. Daemon then mounted the ice dragon.
The army around was still confused, but he had already conveyed his intentions to the commanders: he would act alone, and they should act quickly when the opportunity arose.
There was no more time to waste. It was the chance to attack.
Today would be the first strike.
Daemon made Winter take flight. The wings opened, and she surged into the sky.
That movement immediately caught the attention of the enemy army, which now had no advantage whatsoever, while they could hear the three dragons roaring at each other, with a certain tension in the air until just moments ago.
Now, they looked alarmed at the white dragon, flying through the sky at a height unreachable by archers.
As it advanced in their direction, the entire camp went on alert.
"He's coming toward us!", someone shouted.
The men began to prepare quickly, attentive, watching the dragon cut through the sky.
Winter crossed the entire camp, but did not attack.
The soldiers remained in position, prepared for any charge or sudden dive.
But the dragon kept moving forward until it completely passed over the camp, heading south.
Then... they saw it. It began to descend.
"He's descending!", they shouted again, but they were the men at the rear of the camp, expecting an immediate attack.
Daemon continued only descending, kilometers away, encountering the scouts of the enemy army — men who watched the region to prevent any surprise approach.
And then, a dragon advanced upon them.
"Run! Run!", one of them shouted.
There were only two of them. They pushed their horses to the limit, looking up in desperation. There were no forests or trees to hide in — only open field, with the grass flattened by the army's march in the previous days.
Winter kept diving, her wings adjusted to pursue exactly those men, according to the will of her rider.
Daemon whistled, enjoying the sensation of the high-speed descent. The pursuit of the desperate men added a certain pleasure to the moment.
"Īs!" [Ice!], he said in the ancient tongue, following the same logic as Dracarys, in High Valyrian.
The men could only witness their own death.
White flames struck them like a waterfall, completely enveloping and consuming them, along with their horses, in a quick death.
Winter spread her wings again and continued gliding forward as she stabilized in the air.
She did not stop spewing white flames after eliminating the two scouts.
The flames continued advancing in a line as the dragon flew, leaving their trail on the ground, freezing the grass and creating ice spikes that grew and expanded. The moisture in the air began to be drawn in and transformed into ice, intensified by the magic of the white flames.
After all, the moisture in the air alone could not form massive layers of ice — a large accumulation of water would be necessary. And the water molecules in the air alone would not be enough.
Daemon continued creating a line as he kept flying from east to west.
In the camp, men watched in shock as they raised spyglasses. They managed to see the dragon circling the area, while the ice continued to form wherever it passed.
Winter climbed again and advanced. Daemon gave the order and his dragon unleashed more flames beside the already existing formations, further expanding the frozen structures.
And so it continued, creating lines upon lines of ice, as the spikes grew larger and larger.
Aegon reached the edge of the camp with his men, staring in astonishment at the enormous ice formations. Even from two kilometers away, it was already possible to see the white wall forming.
"What is he doing?", Aegon asked, looking at Varys.
"I don't know. But this reminds me of something... There are reports that he froze an entire camp in the North, killing everyone. They say the air became toxic to breathe… but maybe that's not it now. Perhaps he's blocking an escape route", Varys replied, concerned.
"For that, he would have to surround the entire camp with ice. If he keeps doing this on the other sides, we'll be surrounded… and our men will lose even more morale", Tarly murmured, visibly tense.
If their men realized they were being cornered, it would only be a matter of time before despair took hold — and with it, the certainty of death.
"Damn it… we're not going to fall here, are we?", Aegon roared.
Aegon was speechless. He had already gone to bed when they heard the roar of a fourth dragon the previous night, which only increased the despair among his men. He had thought he might get some rest, but was forced to call another meeting with his lords, questioning how, suddenly, a new dragon had appeared.
For a moment, some believed it could be his lost dragon. But the description was different.
It was completely gray, covered in spikes. Its wings also had spikes. There was no known dragon with those characteristics — not even the white ice dragon.
While Aegon consumed himself, not knowing what to do, sinking deeper and deeper into his bad situation, the enemy had even more dragons to use as bargaining pieces...
Daemon landed with his dragon before the ice formations.
"Well… this is a good start", he said.
The environment was already beginning to change around them — exactly as he wanted.
Taking a deep breath before the frozen structures, Daemon then released a Thu'um.
"VEN GAAR NOS!"
The instant the words echoed, a massive hurricane exploded forward, advancing against the ice, tearing the very ground apart and creating a trench 4 meters wide and about one meter deep, as this shout was even more powerful than Unrelenting Force.
The cyclone surged forward, leaving a trail of destruction until it struck the ice, breaking and shattering it into multiple layers, while the very air was pulled in and spun violently.
The hurricane appeared with an earthy coloration… but soon became completely white, as the cold and the ice were absorbed.
"What is that!?", the men beside Aegon shouted, in panic as they witnessed that magical phenomenon that made every witness's heart sink.
The hurricane kept advancing.
It was visible even from a distance, crossing the field for hundreds of meters, until… it stopped.
For a moment, everyone believed it would reach them.
But it didn't.
Relief came — far too brief.
Suddenly, another cyclone roared behind the wall of ice, advancing forward.
And another.
And yet another.
Several cyclones began to appear, transforming into true ice cyclones that advanced across the field.
Daemon continued unleashing his Thu'um, analyzing the entire area, especially the ground around it.
The ice was like a wave of death.
The grass around began to die rapidly, drying and darkening from the moment the ice had been formed.
The air was killing the vegetation.
His plan was simple: to summon multiple cyclones — more than twelve — around the entire ice formation, creating a constantly moving field where wind and cold advanced like a weapon against the enemy army.
From above, he could clearly see the trail left by the hurricanes — a path of death.
Even the more distant areas, where the winds reached, began to wither.
"Wait…", murmured one of the men inside Aegon's camp, finally realizing.
The grass around continued to darken.
It was impossible not to notice.
The green disappeared, leaving the leaves in a burnt yellow coloration mixed with brown, as they were dried out.
"The wind… the hurricane is creating wind… the air is killing the vegetation, my lord!", the man said, trembling.
That made everyone around grow tense.
"Look closely! You can see it even without a spyglass!", Varys pointed to several dark areas in the field. "It's coming toward us!"
"It's coming…", another man repeated, his voice shaking.
"He's trying to kill us through the very air. He's poisoning the air!", Garlan said, stepping forward. More than ever, he forced himself to ignore the grief over his brother's death. He needed to survive. The Reach still depended on him.
When he saw the layer of ice forming, he immediately knew Daemon was preparing something.
Now, upon realizing that the air was being poisoned by the cold — and that the hurricanes were carrying it directly toward them — panic took over.
After all… who fought like that?
Daemon did not care about appearing dishonorable in the eyes of others.
He won wars. He did not play at honor.
What kind of general would he be if he did not use everything at his disposal to massacre the enemy while preserving as many of his own men as possible?
To think otherwise, or to seek honor, would be naïve. Daemon was the type who, in a trial by combat duel, would throw a sword to kill his opponent in just a few seconds, so why would war be any different?
He could be called a demon, a cruel general… but he would win that war. And he would do so while preserving his soldiers.
Daemon moved again toward Winter, who took flight and ended up flying over the ice without being affected. He had resistance to the cold through his magic — around 98% with his spells — and Winter was naturally immune, protected by the absolute zero of her own flames.
From above, they watched their enemies in the camp and the area where the hurricanes had stopped... The grass continued to die like an uncontrollable plague... Watching the green turn into that more withered color...
The wind advanced at high speed, like a wave of death.
The enemy army was in panic.
Now, everything depended on how his own men would react when the moment came.
Daemon had around 180 thousand men… and dragons.
And he intended to use everything he had to end that damned war as quickly as possible — perhaps even on that very day.
