Chapter 277: Between Fire and Compassion (1)
Another arrow shot out from Roxanna’s bow, forcing two eagle beastmen to quickly dodge away from Cyrus. The thick smoke burning in the air made her eyes sting painfully, but she refused to stop aiming.
Then, for a brief moment, Cyrus slowed down and Roxanna noticed it immediately.
"Please..." Her voice trembled this time, sounding weak and close to breaking apart. "Please... don’t go."
"Roxanna!" Azul’s voice suddenly echoed from afar.
He tried to run toward her, but flames surrounded the area between them, making it difficult for him to move forward.
"Roxanna, be careful!" he shouted anxiously.
Azul clicked his tongue in frustration and desperately wished Luan were closer to her instead. But the moment he turned his head, he saw Luan already fighting several eagle beastmen nearby.
"I thought you were over there!" Azul shouted at him.
Luan glanced toward Azul in the middle of the battle. The second he realized Roxanna wasn’t anywhere near Azul, his expression instantly darkened.
"And I thought you were supposed to protect our wife!" Luan snapped angrily.
He immediately moved even faster, slicing through the eagle beastmen surrounding him.
"Damn it!" he cursed harshly. "Why do they keep coming?!"
Honestly, he was right. The eagle beastmen truly felt endless.
Their home in the rocky mountains had already been destroyed, yet somehow, their numbers still hadn’t decreased much at all. Or maybe they had abandoned their settlement long before the demon beasts destroyed it.
"Azul, can you see Roxanna?!" Luan shouted again.
Azul shook his head quickly. "I can’t! The fire is too big!"
Luan was about to yell at him to run through the flames anyway, but then he suddenly remembered that Azul was a fish beastman and then decided to swallow his words.
"Switch positions with me!" Luan finally shouted instead.
Without wasting another second, Azul rushed toward him and swung his spear at the eagle beastmen nearby.
"Find her," Azul whispered as they passed each other.
Luan gave a short nod before immediately running away from the flames, only to charge straight toward them again.
When he was only a few meters away, he suddenly jumped high into the air and landed on the other side of the burning fire.
"Roxanna!" Luan shouted the moment his feet hit the ground.
His emerald eyes instantly found her standing in the middle of the chaos, still firing arrows into the sky even though blood was already running down her hands.
"Cyrus..." Roxanna turned toward Luan with tears in her eyes. "Cyrus won’t listen to me." Her voice shook badly. "He... he wants to leave me."
Luan immediately looked up toward the sky. Above them, Cyrus continued flying in circles while the eagle beastmen chased after him from every direction, trying to catch him.
"Roxanna..." Luan spoke gently, trying to calm her panic. "He doesn’t look like he wants to leave."
Roxanna quickly looked at him.
"It feels more like..." Luan narrowed his eyes at the sky. "He’s trying to do something."
Roxanna slowly stopped shooting her arrows and squinted upward, trying her best to understand what Cyrus was doing.
"Then what is he trying to do?" she asked helplessly. "He even apologized to me earlier."
"I don’t know yet," Luan admitted honestly. Then his expression became serious again. "But Roxanna, the fire is getting worse. You need to leave this place now."
Luan stepped closer, clearly planning to carry her away himself if necessary. But the moment he reached for her, Roxanna immediately pulled herself away.
"But Cyrus..." she cried out. "We can’t just leave him behind!"
"He’s flying high in the sky," Luan quickly replied. "No matter where we go, we’ll still be able to see him."
[He’s right...] Roxanna thought to herself. [No matter where I go, I’ll still be able to see Cyrus, but still...]
"Roxanna!" Luan suddenly grabbed both of her shoulders firmly.
"Wake up!" he shouted loudly, trying to force her back to her senses before the situation became even more dangerous.
"I don’t want anything bad to happen to Cyrus either, but that doesn’t mean you can ignore your own safety!"
Luan’s voice sounded sharp and desperate at the same time.
"You’re the leader of the Vixeria Tribe," he continued, gripping her shoulders tightly. "And you’re also carrying our child. If something happens to you, the consequences will be terrible."
Those words instantly pulled Roxanna back to reality.
She didn’t want anything bad to happen to any of her husbands, but if she died too, this tribe would lose too much.
They would lose their leader, their healer, and the future child still growing inside her womb.
"L-Let’s... let’s leave this place," Roxanna finally whispered, her voice trembling badly.
Luan immediately let out a relieved sigh. "Alri—"
BOOM!
A terrifying explosion suddenly erupted only a few meters away from them.
Dirt and broken stones flew everywhere, but that wasn’t the worst part. The flames bursting out from beneath the ground were far more horrifying.
The fire rushed toward them at terrifying speed, and without even thinking, Roxanna shoved Luan away from the flames.
At that moment, only one thought filled her mind. [I’ll survive... but Luan won’t.]
After all, she believed her healing ability would still be able to regenerate her burned wounds.
She would probably lose consciousness for days because her body would need to heal itself while also supporting the child inside her womb, but in the end, she would survive.
"ROXANNA!" Luan screamed in panic.
High above the battlefield, Cyrus instantly lowered his head after hearing the explosion. His sharp eyes immediately locked onto the flames that had swallowed Roxanna.
"AZUL, WE NEED WATER!" Luan roared loudly, hoping Azul could hear him over the chaos.
But even Azul was struggling badly.
The paths leading toward the water had already been blocked by fire, while eagle beastmen kept attacking him from every direction to stop him from moving forward.
Luan felt like his heart was about to burst from fear. "Oh, fuck this!"
Without caring anymore, he prepared to charge straight through the flames himself just to pull Roxanna back out.
But then—BOOM!
Another explosion burst from the ground.
This one wasn’t as large as before, but the force of the blast pushed part of the fire aside for a brief moment, allowing Luan to finally see Roxanna clearly.
"Roxan—"
The rest of his words instantly got stuck in his throat. His eyes widened in complete shock as he stared at her.
"How..." he whispered shakily. "How is this even possible?"
